Gyeongbuk Price Committee Raises City Gas Rates by Average 4.78%... Residential Rates Effectively Frozen
On July 13, North Gyeongsang Province held the 'Gyeongbuk Province Price Countermeasure Committee' and decided to raise the city gas supply cost by an average of 4.78% (from 2.4659 won/MJ in 2025 to 2.5837 won/MJ in 2026), retroactively effective from July 1, 2026.
This adjustment to the supply cost was prepared to ease the burden on residents and stabilize prices in the midst of ongoing uncertainties in domestic and global economic conditions. In addition, the objectivity and reliability of the process were enhanced by strengthening the verification procedures for supply cost calculation data by region, in accordance with the 'City Gas Company Supply Cost Calculation Standards,' and reflecting the results of research conducted by an accounting firm.
Since the 1990s, North Gyeongsang Province has maintained the basic charge at 750 won for over 30 years, but has now adjusted it to 1,000 won. However, to consider the burden on residents, the usage-based charges have also been adjusted, so the final residential supply cost will be maintained at the current level.
An official from North Gyeongsang Province stated, "Although the basic charge for residential city gas rates has been raised by 250 won, from 750 won to 1,000 won, its proportion within the total bill is minimal, so the overall residential rate is effectively frozen. On the other hand, industrial and fuel cell rates, excluding residential rates, have been increased by about 4 to 5%."
The supply costs by region have been adjusted as follows: Pohang area: 2.4916 won/MJ (3.56% increase), Gumi area: 2.5376 won/MJ (6.64% increase), Gyeongju area: 2.3067 won/MJ (3.13% increase), and Andong area: 2.9989 won/MJ (5.55% increase). MJ (megajoule) is a unit of calorific value used for calculating city gas rates.
Based on the average monthly residential usage (1,948 MJ), the monthly city gas bill is expected to be about 51,500 won in the Pohang area, about 51,680 won in the Gumi area, about 51,230 won in the Gyeongju area, and about 53,340 won in the Andong area.
