Taxi With Hazard Lights on During Rush Hour... Police Save Unconscious 2-Year-Old With Quick Thinking
Taxi Driver: "I Need to Get to the Hospital Quickly"
Two-Year-Old Showing High Fever, Vomiting, and Cyanosis
Arrived at Hospital in 10 Minutes... Discharged the Same Day
On their way home from work, police officers who became suspicious of a speeding taxi with its hazard lights on discovered a child losing consciousness inside and rushed the child to the hospital for emergency treatment.
According to Yonhap News on July 13, at approximately 7:31 p.m. on May 28, Sergeant Park Sangmin and Officer Jeon Wanjip from the Toseong Police Precinct of Goseong Police Station were on flexible patrol duty when they spotted a taxi driving faster than other vehicles with its hazard lights flashing.
Detecting signs of an emergency, the officers stopped the taxi. The taxi driver requested help, saying, "The child is very sick, and I need to get to the hospital quickly." In the back seat were a guardian and a two-year-old child.
The child had been experiencing a high fever and vomiting since the previous day, and their condition had rapidly deteriorated after leaving daycare. At the time, the child was in a critical state, losing consciousness and showing signs of cyanosis—a condition where the skin or mucous membranes turn blue or purple due to low blood oxygen saturation.
The guardian had chosen to take a taxi to reach the hospital as quickly as possible but was struggling to make progress due to heavy traffic during rush hour. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the officers immediately transferred the guardian and child to their patrol car and, with the siren on, transported them to a nearby hospital.
Normally, it would have taken about 30 minutes to travel from Munamgyo Bridge in Jugwang-myeon, Goseong County, to Sokcho Medical Center during rush hour. However, thanks to the police’s swift action, they arrived at the hospital in about 10 minutes. The child received emergency care right away, quickly recovered, and was safely discharged from the hospital on the same day.
This rescue operation is being recognized as a case in which the officers’ keen observation and quick decision-making directly led to saving a life. The police plan to recommend both officers for commendation in recognition of their efforts.
