View original imageThe body of a Navy frigate crew member who went missing near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the East Sea on July 12 was found approximately a day after the disappearance.
On July 13, the Navy announced to the press, "At around 5:58 a.m. today, the body of the Navy soldier who went missing yesterday from a patrol vessel on duty in the East Sea was discovered in waters 52 kilometers east of Goseong-eup, Goseong County, Gangwon Province, and was recovered using the rapid inflatable boat (RIB) of the frigate (FFG)." The Navy stated that once the soldier’s body and the vessel involved in the incident arrive at the Navy’s East Sea base later this morning, an investigation will be conducted into the circumstances of the incident and the cause of death.
It has been reported that the missing soldier was not wearing a life jacket when the body was discovered. The frigate involved in the incident returned to the Navy’s East Sea base at 8 a.m. today, and the military plans to investigate the soldier’s whereabouts by analyzing onboard closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and other evidence.

The fallen service member was a private in his twenties, and the vessel was a frigate belonging to the 1st Fleet. The missing soldier, who was on board the Navy frigate performing patrol duties approximately 50 kilometers east of Goseong-eup, Goseong County, was last seen by the on-duty officer in charge of the internal patrol between midnight and 2 a.m. the previous day. The soldier was reported missing when he did not report for duty at 8 a.m. The Navy, in cooperation with the Coast Guard, deployed around 10 vessels and several aircraft in the search for the missing crew member. Given that the point of disappearance was near the NLL, the military also notified the North through international maritime communication channels accessible to North Korea.
