Police Expand 'Jang Yoon-gi Case' Special Investigation Unit…27 to 41 Members

National Office of Investigation: "A Thorough Probe Without Any Doubt"
The police, who are investigating allegations of misconduct in the investigation of the Gwangju high school girl murder case involving Jang Yoon-gi, will expand the current special investigation team into a special investigation unit.
The National Office of Investigation at the Korean National Police Agency announced on July 11, 2026, “The scope of the investigation into the Jang Yoon-gi case is expanding, with more individuals now under investigation and multiple search and seizure operations being carried out. To ensure a more prompt and thorough fact-finding process, we will expand and reorganize the existing special investigation team into a special investigation unit.”
The unit will be led by Oh Dong-uk, Chief of the Investigation Department at the Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency (Senior Superintendent General). Hong Jang-deuk, the current head of the special investigation team, will be moved to the position of deputy head of the unit.
The number of investigators will increase from the current 27 to a total of 41, with 14 additional personnel. In addition to the Major Crimes Investigation Division of the National Police Agency, members from the secondary offense investigation team and the Digital Forensics Center will also be deployed. A superintendent-level spokesperson will be separately designated.
