Jang Donghyuk Fails to Meet Acting Police Chief... "Police Must Be Completely Overhauled"
People Power Party Demands Media Access to Opening Statements at Meeting
Police Refuse, Citing Agency Security Regulations
Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party, attempted to meet Yoo Jaesung, acting commissioner of the National Police Agency, on the 10th, but the meeting was called off due to differing positions regarding media access.
On the 10th, Jang Donghyuk, the leader of the People Power Party, and party members protested against the police who requested a private meeting, blocking access to reporters and aides during the meeting with Yoo Jaesung, Acting Commissioner of the National Police Agency, regarding the 'Jang Yoonki Incident'. They demanded a meeting with Yoo.
The People Power Party insisted that opening statements at the meeting be made public to the press. However, the police refused, citing security regulations at the agency. As a result, the party leadership, lawmakers, and aides on site attempted to enter the meeting room, but were blocked by police officers. After 50 minutes of confrontation, the attempt to meet ultimately failed.
Regarding the failed meeting, Jang criticized, "This is the lowest level of the Korean police. The people, who have witnessed this, will judge for themselves," adding, "It is shocking that such a police force claims to have been protecting the safety and lives of the people through their investigations."
He also criticized acting commissioner Yoo, stating, "This kind of attitude is precisely why, when their own people are involved, they destroy evidence, manipulate cases, and attempt to cover things up with such recklessness, shamelessness, and audacity. How can the public trust such a police force?"
Jang added, "The issue is not supplementary investigative authority, but rather that the Korean police must first be thoroughly overhauled and reformed."
After the meeting attempt failed, Supreme Council member Shin Dongwook told reporters, "What is the commissioner so afraid of that he cannot even show his face? If they have any conscience, both the acting commissioner and Gwangju Police Chief Kim Younggeun should resign immediately."
