Palm Beach Airport Renamed 'Trump Airport'... First Time for a Sitting President
Renamed as "President Donald J. Trump International Airport"
Change effective from the 9th... Total cost reaches $5.5 million
The name of Palm Beach International Airport in Florida, United States, will be changed to "President Donald J. Trump International Airport."
According to reports by foreign media outlets such as The New York Times (NYT), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on social media platform X on the 9th (local time) that the name change had been finalized. The FAA's three-letter airport identifier code will remain "PBI" until August 8, after which it will be changed to "DJT." The airport stated that the total cost of the name change amounted to 5.5 million dollars (approximately 7 billion won).
Palm Beach is a city in southeastern Florida, home to Mar-a-Lago, former U.S. President Donald Trump's luxurious estate. The airport is located about 8 kilometers from Mar-a-Lago, and Trump, who is originally from New York, has frequently stayed in Florida—so much so that he refers to it as his second home. Even after leaving office at the end of his first term in January 2021, he has mostly resided in Palm Beach.
Eric Trump, Donald Trump's second son and Vice President of the Trump Organization, the family business, stated on X that, as a son and someone who uses the airport almost every day, he will always be proud to see the letters "DJT" printed on his boarding pass. Donald Trump also posted on social media platform Truth Social on the same day, mentioning the airport and emphasizing that it will become "the greatest and most spectacular airport in the world."
In the United States, there is also Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, Arkansas, named after former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. However, Trump is the first sitting president to have an airport named after himself.
The Florida State Senate passed a bill to rename the airport in February and sent it to Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, who signed it into law the following month. At the time, Republican state senator Debbie Mayfield, who sponsored the bill, stated, "Regardless of personal opinions about the president, Trump has made meaningful achievements for Florida and the United States."

Meanwhile, since his inauguration in January last year, Trump has begun attaching his name to public facilities. In December, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, changed its name to the "Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Performing Arts Center." However, in a ruling in May, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ordered the removal of Trump's name, stating that the name could not be changed without Congressional approval.
