[New York Stock Exchange] Dow Swings Around 52,300... Nasdaq Rises on Semiconductor Strength
International Oil Prices Edge Lower
On July 9 (local time), the three major U.S. stock indices showed mixed performance as markets closely monitored the war situation in Iran. The Dow Jones Index fluctuated around the 52,300 mark.
As of 9:35 a.m. at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 9.21 points (0.02%) from the previous trading day at 52,357.60. The S&P 500 Index, which is focused on large-cap stocks, was up 25.86 points (0.35%) at 7,508.79, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Index rose 150.67 points (0.58%) to 26,020.21.
The market turned mixed as it kept a close eye on developments in the Iran war. The U.S. Central Command announced the previous day that it had completed additional airstrikes against Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump disclosed news that Iran had proposed negotiations, but crude oil futures prices remained unchanged.
Mason Mendez, a global real asset analyst at the Wells Fargo Investment Institute, stated, "Expectations that Persian Gulf exports will quickly return to normal are definitely being challenged. With already low global reserves and inventories further reducing the supply buffer, if tensions escalate, even a resumption of negotiations could cause the geopolitical risk premium on oil prices to rise even higher."
Mendez further added, "Emerging geopolitical risks may drive risk aversion in the short term, but robust stock earnings growth and the ongoing strength of AI are likely to push the S&P 500 Index into its year-end target range of 7,800 to 8,000."
International oil prices are trending slightly lower. At this time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was down 0.41% from the previous session at $73.22 per barrel. Brent crude on the ICE Futures Exchange was recorded at $78.00 per barrel, down 0.01% from the previous session.
As a result, Exxon Mobil fell by 1.54% and Chevron declined by 0.75%. In contrast, major semiconductor stocks are trending higher, with Intel up 5.61%, AMD rising 6.17%, Applied Digital up 2.51%, Qualcomm climbing 2.79%, and Cisco Systems up 2.64%.
Meanwhile, on this day, the U.S. Department of Labor announced that new jobless claims for the week of June 28 to July 4 stood at 215,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week. This figure is lower than the expert forecast of 218,000 compiled by Dow Jones.
