First Malaria Alert Issued in Paju City on the 9th
Gyeonggi Province issued its first malaria alert of the year on July 9.
A malaria alert is issued to prevent local outbreaks when either the first cluster case occurs after a nationwide malaria advisory has been issued, or when the average daily number of vector mosquitoes in the same city, county, or district is 5.0 or higher for two consecutive weeks.
This alert was issued in response to the first cluster case reported in Paju City after the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency issued a nationwide malaria advisory on June 22. A cluster case is defined as two or more malaria patients in a high-risk area who develop symptoms within 14 days of each other and live within 1 kilometer of each other.
Gyeonggi Province plans to conduct an in-depth epidemiological investigation to identify the presumed infection area of the cluster case patients, mosquito breeding conditions in the area, the environment around the patients' residences, co-exposed individuals, and other risk factors.
To enable early detection of additional cases in Paju City, the province has instructed local medical associations and pharmacists’ groups to intensify publicity and is providing safety alerts and information through the media to inform residents and visitors of the risk of infection. In addition, the province is actively implementing response measures under the alert, such as intensive control of mosquito habitats near patients and breeding sites, rapid diagnostic testing for early detection, and providing prophylactic medication.

Yoo Youngcheol, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Health and Wellness Bureau, stated, "In malaria risk areas, it is important to strengthen mosquito control and follow preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites. In particular, residents and visitors in high-risk areas should promptly get tested at the nearest public health center or other medical institution if they develop suspected malaria symptoms."
