A fire broke out at the Seokpo Smelter in Seokpo-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, North Gyeongsang Province at around 12:36 p.m. on July 9, and authorities are currently working to extinguish the blaze.
Authorities have issued Level 1 emergency response, dispatching all personnel from the local fire station, and are carrying out fire suppression and search operations for any possible victims at the scene.
According to authorities, the fire started inside the factory, which contains hazardous materials, raising concerns about the risk of toxic gas emissions due to the blaze. A fire department official stated, "The fire appears to have started in the sulfuric acid manufacturing plant within the smelter."
The Bonghwa-gun local government sent a disaster and safety alert message urging nearby residents to evacuate to locations far from the accident site and advised vehicles in the area to take alternative routes.

The fire authorities explained, "We issued Level 1 response due to concerns about the fire spreading," adding, "We are investigating potential casualties and other damage." A representative from Youngpoong Corporation stated, "We are currently investigating the cause," and added, "Most of the fire at the site appears to have been extinguished."
