Only Six "Comfort Women" Survivors Remain in China
Hui, a Chinese survivor of Japanese military sexual slavery, passed away at her home in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, southern China, in the early morning of July 8. She was 99 years old.
On this day, Chinese media outlet People’s Daily Online cited an announcement from the Research Center for Chinese "Comfort Women" Issues at Shanghai Normal University. Hui was born in Changsha, Hunan Province, in 1928. In the summer of 1945, she and her mother were conscripted under the orders of the Weizhihui (an organization established by collaborators of the Japanese military during World War II in China).
The center explained that among the women forced into labor by the Japanese military at the time, Hui and other young women were taken away and made into sex slaves. Hui was released after suffering for more than ten days.
Hui was officially confirmed as a survivor in August 2024 through an oral interview and archival comparison conducted by the Hunan investigation team of the Research Center for Chinese "Comfort Women" Issues.
The center stated, "Japan’s war of aggression against China brought deep suffering to Hui." They added, "She lost her father as a child, lost her son while still young, and suffered from illness throughout her life." The center continued, "Nevertheless, until her final years, she tenaciously searched for the burial site of her father, who gave his life for the country."
The center further noted, "She endured the pain in her heart and shared her experiences with the world solely in the hope that they would be remembered by history."
