Thai Transgender Illegal Residents Earn Hundreds of Millions Through Dating Sites
Active from January 2024 to Last Month
Engaged in Prostitution for 100,000 to 210,000 Won per Session
Two transgender individuals from Thailand have been arrested and referred for prosecution after illegally residing in Korea and earning hundreds of millions of won through prostitution.
On July 8, the Special Immigration Investigation Unit of the Seoul Immigration Office under the Ministry of Justice announced that it had arrested and referred Thai nationals identified as A and B to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on charges of violating the Immigration Control Act. The referrals were made in late April and mid-June, respectively.
The two are accused of engaging in prostitution in cities including Seoul and Busan from January 2024 until last month, charging between 100,000 and 210,000 won per session and earning approximately 200 million won and 400 million won, respectively. They are believed to have been illegally staying in the country since entering Korea in 2023.
They reportedly recruited clients by posting personal physical details on LGBTQ meetup sites and uploading self-recorded sexual videos on their social networking service (SNS) accounts.
In addition, they took careful steps to avoid detection, such as providing the exact apartment unit number only after receiving photographic confirmation that the client had arrived near the officetel.
The Special Immigration Investigation Unit believes there may be more foreigners engaging in prostitution using similar methods and is monitoring SNS and adult websites.
In an interview with Newsis, Lee Jongcheol, Commissioner of the Seoul Immigration Office, stated, "We will respond to crimes committed by foreigners that threaten social order with zero tolerance. We will also strictly pursue not only foreigners involved in crimes such as prostitution and drug offenses, but also brokers who facilitate such activities."
