Korea Power Exchange Establishes AI Innovation Unit and Restructures Organization for Major Energy Transition
Transition to a Dual Chief System for Management and Technology
Strengthened Response to Renewable Energy and Electricity Market Changes
Organizational Restructuring for Price Bidding and Regional Pricing Systems
The Korea Power Exchange has undertaken a sweeping organizational restructuring in line with the government’s major energy transition and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation policies. The organization has shifted from its previous four-division structure to a dual system led by the Chief of Management and the Chief of Technology. It has also established a new AI Innovation Unit and a dedicated renewable energy division, aiming to respond to the expansion of renewable energy and reforms in the electricity market system.
The Korea Power Exchange announced on July 8 that it recently amended its organizational regulations to implement these changes.
The reorganization aims to strengthen capabilities in market and grid response, establish a comprehensive company-wide AI transformation (AX) system, enhance the execution of national policy initiatives and management strategies, and improve the efficiency of core business operations.
To address the expansion of renewable energy, the organization has transitioned from the previous four-division structure to a two-chief system centered on the Chief of Management and the Chief of Technology. The Chief of Management will oversee the institution’s AI transformation, while the Chief of Technology will supervise three major business divisions: the electricity market, energy transition, and power grid.
Additionally, a Renewable Energy Integrated Management Office has been placed directly under the Head of the Power Grid Division, and the existing Grid Innovation Office has been reorganized into the Renewable Innovation Office, with new teams established for Renewable Standards and Renewable Performance.
The organization has also expanded its structure for AI-driven work innovation. The former IT Office has been restructured into the AI Innovation Unit under the Chief of Management, and the AX Data Team has been reorganized as the company-wide AX Coordination Team, which will be responsible for establishing a company-wide AX master plan and building the AI data platform.
Organizational changes have also been made to respond to shifts in the electricity market system. To introduce the price bidding system and the regional pricing system, the Bidding System Team and the Pricing System Team have been newly established or reorganized, and the Market Rules Team has been merged into the Leading Market Team.
Furthermore, the Power New Business Office has been reorganized as the Distributed Energy Business Office, and the Power New Business Team has become the VPP Business Team, supporting the activation of distributed energy and virtual power plants (VPPs). The function of member company management has been unified under the Customer Coordination Office.
In addition, the Strategic Planning Team has been expanded into the Planning Office to comprehensively oversee the implementation of national policy initiatives and mid-to-long-term management strategies, while the ESG Management Office has been newly established to enhance ethical management and legal affairs. The safety management function has also been reorganized as the Safety Policy Office directly under the CEO to strengthen the safety accountability management system.
