According to the UK’s Daily Mail on July 8 (local time), a video of a boat ride at the Trimper Rides amusement park in Ocean City, Maryland, has been circulating on social media, fueling debate.
The video, posted by a TikTok user on July 6, shows a ride’s pool filled with dark brown, murky water, with a child floating on a small boat across the surface.
While the child appears to be enjoying the ride, comments expressed concern about the condition of the water. Many users pointed out, "That ride urgently needs maintenance," "It looks like water scooped from a toilet," and "The water must be highly contaminated."
Some internet users even compared the brown water to the chocolate river from the film "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." One user commented, "They might as well call it Willy Wonka’s chocolate river," while another joked, "I thought it was a Willy Wonka-themed ride."
The cause of the water turning brown and how frequently the water is changed remains unknown. In response, the Daily Mail reported that it had reached out to Trimper Rides for a statement.

The post at that time showed a child riding a boat on clear, blue water, accompanied by a caption expressing anticipation for boat rides that bring "sunshine, smiles, and the feeling of summer." The amusement park also posted photos in December last year showing children on rides above blue water. Past visitors to the ride have shared these older photos, recalling, "The water used to be clear and transparent."

Trimper Rides is the second oldest family-run amusement park in the United States, founded in 1893 by Daniel Trimper and Margaret Trimper. The two German immigrants settled in Ocean City in 1890, purchased their first property the following year, and later expanded from hotel operations into amusement and beach attractions for tourists and local residents. While annual visitor numbers to Trimper Rides have not been disclosed, Ocean City, where the park is located, reportedly attracts about 8 million tourists each year.
