T-Robotics Joins Korea's First Unmanned Demonstration Project for Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility
T-Robotics, a company specializing in vacuum robots and autonomous mobile robots (AMR), announced on July 8 that it will participate in South Korea's first unmanned demonstration project for radioactive waste disposal facilities, marking its expansion into the high-risk industrial robot market.
T-Robotics was finally selected to join the "2026 Large-scale Convergence Robot Demonstration Project for Solving Social Problems," organized by the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement. The company formed a consortium with Gyeongbuk ICT Convergence Industry Promotion Association (GBICT), Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD), and Klobot.
This project, titled "Demonstration of Multi-type Robot Operations for Safe Management of High-risk Radioactive Waste," is the first domestic demonstration project to automate key processes at radioactive waste disposal facilities using robots.
The demonstration will take place at the KORAD radioactive waste disposal facility located in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. The project is divided into safety monitoring and radioactive waste logistics. T-Robotics is responsible for automating the waste logistics process. By applying various robots to tasks previously performed by human workers, such as surveillance and patrol, waste transport, loading, and sorting, the aim is to reduce the risk of radiation exposure and improve both work safety and operational efficiency.
In this project, T-Robotics will supply an automation solution for handling heavy radioactive waste, including unmanned forklifts, AMRs, and palletizing robots. The unmanned forklift will load radioactive waste drums stored in the warehouse onto the AMR, which will then transport them to the loading site. The palletizing robot will carry out the final loading task, creating an integrated logistics automation system that connects the warehouse to the work site.
The company emphasized that this project is significant because it expands the application of industrial robots from general manufacturing plants to high-risk industrial sites where human access is difficult. Since nuclear facilities require a high level of safety and precision, the importance of robotic technology that can safely carry out work while reducing workers' risk of radiation exposure is growing.
A T-Robotics representative stated, "Radioactive waste disposal facilities require the highest level of safety and reliability among industrial sites. This demonstration will serve as an important milestone, proving that industrial robot and AMR technologies can be effectively utilized even in highly demanding work environments."
The representative added, "Going forward, we will broaden the scope of robot applications beyond manufacturing into nuclear power, energy, and national core facilities, thereby creating new growth opportunities in various high value-added industries."
