Yeoju City plans to lay the foundation for the revitalization of the old downtown by sequentially promoting projects such as the Jungang-dong 1 District Urban Regeneration New Deal Project, the Gyeonggi The Dream Regeneration Project, the creation of an urban regeneration innovation district, the Namhangang Terrace, and the construction of a Traveler Station.
The core project for old downtown revitalization is the 'Jungang-dong 1 District Complex Building,' which will be built on the site of Ha-dong Jeil Market. With a total project cost of 56.4 billion won, the complex will have a total floor area of 16,060 square meters and feature a public parking lot with 400 spaces, a co-existence platform, and a community center. The city will begin the design phase in December this year and aims to complete construction by 2029.
The former Gyeonggi Silk site will be transformed into a complex hub that combines youth entrepreneurship and culture. Based on a business agreement with The Born Korea, Yeoju City will start remodeling the main factory in October this year and, from 2028, plans to operate a food court and pop-up stores to foster the area as a regional attraction that links youth entrepreneurship and tourism. The stagnant Chang-dong Food Alley will also see efforts to revive local businesses through improvements to the residential environment, festivals, and night markets.
The Namhangang riverside will be reorganized as a space to enhance tourism competitiveness. The 'Namhangang Terrace' project, which will convert a 730-meter section from Daerosa to the intersection at Sejong Yeoju Hospital into a one-way street, create pedestrian-friendly spaces, and install nightscape lighting, is scheduled for completion in December this year.
Lee Chungwoo, Mayor of Yeoju, stated at the press briefing for the 9th term of the local government on the 8th, "We will focus administrative power on organically linking urban regeneration, expansion of living SOC, and welfare policies to revitalize the old downtown and improve the quality of life for citizens." With a total project cost of 6.51 billion won, the facility will be built with one basement floor and three above-ground floors, serving as a rest and information hub for cyclists and tourists. Recently, additional remains dating back to before the Goryeo Dynasty were discovered at the project site, raising expectations for its potential use in connection with historical and cultural resources.
In the Hongmun-dong area, an urban regeneration innovation district project is planned to prevent hollowing out following the relocation of public offices. This major project, with a total investment of 120.8 billion won, will create a complex commercial space and a multi-purpose education and culture center. The city plans to hold resident briefings and gather opinions from the city council in the second half of this year, aiming to apply for a contest by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in March next year.
In addition, Yeoju City will pilot the 'Happiness Table' project for some senior citizen centers starting in October, providing side dishes one to three times a week as part of efforts to strengthen welfare for the elderly.
Mayor Lee emphasized, "This blueprint is not simply about renovating underdeveloped areas, but is a process to create growth engines for Yeoju's next 100 years. We will continue to communicate with citizens and faithfully implement the promised projects to breathe new vitality into the old downtown."
The Chang-dong Food Alley will also promote the revitalization of the old downtown's commercial district through improvements to the pedestrian and residential environments, as well as the operation of festivals and night markets.
