Synergy Expected by Integrating AI into Existing Manufacturing
Former KAIST Computer Science Professor Appointed
On July 8, Hyosung announced that it has established the 'AI Convergence Research Institute' to drive a company-wide, full-scale artificial intelligence (AI) transformation.
The AI Convergence Research Institute plans to aggressively pursue 'application and convergence-type research and development,' integrating the latest AI technologies into Hyosung's existing business divisions, including heavy industries, textiles, and chemicals, in response to the full-fledged era of AI.
Hyosung intends to position AI not merely as a tool for work efficiency or cost reduction, but as a core driver leading the development of high value-added new products and the design and execution of future new businesses at its key subsidiaries—such as Hyosung Heavy Industries, Hyosung TNC, and Hyosung Chemical.
Hyosung has appointed Emeritus Professor Maeng Seong-Hyun of KAIST as the inaugural head of the AI Convergence Research Institute, with the rank of executive vice president. Dr. Maeng is a renowned AI technology expert who has led the fields of semantic-based information retrieval, text mining, natural language processing, and language modeling for over 30 years, having previously served as a professor at Syracuse University and KAIST's School of Computing. Over the past eight months, Dr. Maeng has served as Hyosung's AI advisor, providing counsel on the company's digital transformation direction and delivering special lectures to enhance employees' AI capabilities.
