'Pro-Moon' Ko Minjung Runs for Party Leadership... Will She Become a Game Changer at the Convention?
Emphasizing a ‘Young, United Democratic Party’
Some Expect Her to Serve as a Buffer in the Three-Way Race
Assemblywoman Ko Min-jung of the Democratic Party of Korea has announced her candidacy for the party leadership at the 8·17 National Convention. Attention is focused on how the entry of Ko, who is affiliated with the pro-Moon Jae-in faction, will impact the convention, which has become heated over debates regarding party legitimacy.
On July 8, at the National Assembly's communication center, Ko officially declared her candidacy, stating, "I will pave the way for a ‘young Democratic Party’ and a ‘united Democratic Party’ that brightens the future for youth and protects the daily lives of the people, thereby ensuring the success of the Lee Jaemyung administration." Advocating for a generational shift within the Democratic Party, Ko added, "Young people should not be used as accessories; they should be at the center. I do not know how far I can go, but if there is unfinished work, the next person will forge the path forward."
Within the party, there is anticipation that Ko’s entry could serve as a buffer in an election race that was previously expected to be a fierce three-way contest among former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, Assemblyman Song Young-gil, and former chair Jeong Cheong-rae. One first-term lawmaker predicted, "Sometimes, she can play the role of mediator and supporter, helping to ease the tensions among the leadership contenders." In her candidacy speech, Ko said, "We must move beyond labeling and derogatory language, recognize and communicate with each other, and seek alternatives together."
Some believe that Ko’s candidacy could disadvantage former chair Jeong, who is seeking support from pro-Moon voters. Regarding the outcome of the 6·3 local elections, Ko commented, "The public has chastised the Democratic Party." On Jeong’s visit to former President Moon Jae-in immediately after stepping down as chair, Ko remarked, "If the intention is obvious, it loses its emotional impact."

Meanwhile, there are also projections that Ko’s entry will have limited impact, as the Democratic Party holds a preliminary primary to narrow the field to three final candidates if there are four or more candidates for the party leadership.
