Gaon Cable Expands Transmission Cable Lineup... Targets KEPCO Bids Amid 'AI Boom'
Responding to Surging Demand for Ultra-High Voltage Transmission Networks Driven by AI
Government Expands Infrastructure Including AI Data Centers
Enhancing Competitiveness in the Ultra-High Voltage Transmission Market
As the government pushes ahead with the nationwide establishment of AI (Artificial Intelligence) data centers and semiconductor clusters, Gaon Cable is launching a full-scale initiative to target the power transmission market by strengthening its ultra-high voltage cable lineup and investing in production facilities.
According to Gaon Cable on July 8, the company is expanding its product range beyond the existing 154kV (kilovolt) 1000 sqmm ultra-high voltage cable to include the 2500 sqmm (tubular conductor) model that meets Korea Electric Power Corporation’s specifications. These products are designed for large-capacity power transmission and are slated for full-scale supply starting next year.
This investment is aimed at proactively responding to the surging demand for ultra-high voltage transmission networks, driven by the expansion of AI data centers, semiconductor manufacturing facilities, and offshore wind power.
Recently, Korea Electric Power Corporation revised its procurement system to separate bids for ultra-high voltage cables and accessories. Previously, only three companies, including LS Cable, were able to participate, but from now on, cable-specialized companies such as Gaon Cable will also be able to join the bidding process.
Gaon Cable entered the ultra-high voltage cable market over a decade ago and has since expanded its business base by supplying 66kV and 154kV ultra-high voltage cables for projects such as the Jeonnam Offshore Wind Power Complex Phase 1 grid and large-scale data center power networks in Gyeonggi Province.
With the government recently promoting the establishment of AI data centers and semiconductor clusters, the need to expand power infrastructure is growing. The industry estimates that the additional power demand will reach approximately 28GW (gigawatts), and expects demand for ultra-high voltage cables to increase as well.
