Jeonbuk Metropolitan Investigation Unit to Lead Case of Radiologic Technologist’s Death After Bullying Allegations
Said She "Didn't Want to Go to Work" Before Being Found Dead
Bereaved Family: "We Want a Sincere Apology from the Hospital"
The Jeonbuk Metropolitan Investigation Unit at the Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency will take over the case of the death of a female radiologic technologist in her 20s who worked at a general hospital in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do.
On July 7, the Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency announced that it had reached this decision after comprehensively considering various circumstances, including the seriousness of the case and the need for a swift investigation. Accordingly, the Gunsan Police Station, which initially handled the investigation, will transfer the case materials to the Metropolitan Investigation Unit.
Ms. A joined Hospital B in Gunsan as a contract radiologic technologist in early June and was reportedly experiencing workplace bullying, which she confided in those around her. After being absent from work without notice on June 26, she was out of contact, and at around noon on June 29, she was found dead in a flower bed at an apartment complex in Gunsan.
The bereaved family asserted that Ms. A had been taking medication because her work at the hospital was too difficult after joining. The family stated, "She had been struggling even though it had not even been a month since she started," and added, "We heard that after being ordered to go to a particular building, she was scolded for going there, and that employees would sometimes gather together excluding her." They further stated, "We are not seeking compensation; we simply want to hear a sincere apology from the hospital regarding what happened."
On online communities, a user claiming to be a friend of Ms. A posted that "she was prescribed sleeping pills because she was unable to sleep properly, and in the end, she cried and said she didn't want to go to work," calling for a thorough investigation. Ms. A's family also said, "Two days ago, my cousin cried in front of the shoe rack saying she didn't want to go to work," and "She told her friends that she was having a hard time."
However, these statements are the assertions of the bereaved family and acquaintances, and the facts have not yet been confirmed by investigative authorities.
The hospital stated, "We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident," and added, "We have informed the family that we will conduct an internal investigation." The hospital continued, "So far, no evidence of bullying has been found," and noted, "We are verifying the facts through an external labor consultant."
The police are investigating the overall circumstances of the death.
