Jay Y. Lee Attends 'Summer Camp for Billionaires,' Eyes AI Semiconductor Collaboration with Big Tech
A Platform for Global Corporate Collaboration
Second Consecutive Year of Networking Attendance
Will AI Cooperation Expand Amid Growing Big Tech Interest?
Jay Y. Lee, chairman of Samsung Electronics, departed for the United States on July 7 to attend the Sun Valley Conference, which brings together the world's leading big tech CEOs. As competition intensifies in the semiconductor supply chain driven by artificial intelligence (AI), attention is focused on whether Lee will strengthen Samsung’s partnerships with big tech companies in the areas of memory and foundry business.
On this day, Lee left for Seattle, USA at 5 p.m. via the Seoul Gimpo Business Aviation Center (SGBAC) in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. He is scheduled to attend the conference held in Sun Valley, Idaho, from July 7 to 11 (local time).
The Sun Valley Conference, hosted by U.S. investment bank Allen & Company, is a private event attended by global information technology (IT) and media executives. Major big tech CEOs such as those from Apple, Google, Meta, Amazon, and OpenAI regularly participate in this event, earning it the nickname "summer camp for billionaires."

View original imageThe Sun Valley Conference is known not just as a networking event, but also as a venue for launching major mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and strategic partnerships between global companies. Notable examples include Disney’s merger with ABC in 1996 and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s acquisition of The Washington Post in 2013. Because confidential meetings between key executives often serve as the starting point for long-term partnerships before any official announcements, the event attracts keen attention from the global business community.
This year, Apple CEO Tim Cook and John Turnus, Senior Vice President and CEO-designate, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai are reportedly among the invited guests. Conversely, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk are said to be absent from this year’s event.
Lee has built his global network by attending this event every year from 2002, when he was an executive director at Samsung Electronics, through 2016. After being unable to attend for several years due to the political scandal in 2017, he returned to the Sun Valley stage last year after a nine-year hiatus, and this year marks his second consecutive appearance.
This year’s Sun Valley Conference is particularly significant as it takes place amid a major reorganization of the AI semiconductor supply chain. Big tech companies are accelerating strategies to directly secure not only Nvidia GPUs (graphics processing units) for AI service expansion, but also high-bandwidth memory (HBM), proprietary AI chips, foundry services, advanced packaging, and even data center infrastructure.
For Samsung Electronics, this event is an opportunity to broaden its connections with global customers. Samsung not only possesses AI memory solutions such as HBM, but also has foundry capabilities to produce application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and advanced packaging technologies. When adding the high-value semiconductor substrate expertise of Samsung Electro-Mechanics and other affiliates, the company is well positioned to discuss cooperation across the entire AI semiconductor supply chain.
Meanwhile, Samsung Foundry’s leadership in the AI semiconductor market has been rising. After signing a next-generation AI chip foundry contract with Tesla, Samsung Foundry is reportedly also in talks for cooperation with Anthropic and Meta.
Industry insiders predict that Lee could use the Sun Valley Conference as a platform to discuss long-term AI memory supply agreements, advanced packaging partnerships, and foundry deals for proprietary AI chips with top big tech executives. Even if concrete contracts are not immediately released, this high-level networking opportunity is expected to serve as a foundation for mid- and long-term collaboration.
