Cho Kyoungtae to File Ethics Complaint Against Jang Donghyuk: "The Real Serious Offender Is the Leader"
Protesting the Disciplinary Request Against Himself
"Jang Engages in Political Maneuvers to Avoid Resignation"
Kyoengtae Cho, a six-term lawmaker and the most senior member of the People Power Party, announced that he will file a complaint with the party's Central Ethics Committee against Party Leader Jang Donghyuk. In response to a disciplinary request submitted against himself to the Ethics Committee, Cho criticized Jang, stating, "The real serious violator is Leader Jang Donghyuk."
According to political sources on July 7, Cho is scheduled to hold a press conference at the National Assembly’s Communication Center on July 8, where he will denounce the disciplinary request against him and announce his plan to bring a case against Jang to the Ethics Committee.
Previously, Channel A reported that a disciplinary request had been submitted against Cho, alleging that during the election of the National Assembly Vice Speaker, he contacted members of the Democratic Party of Korea to urge them to prevent his rival, Deok Heum Park, from being elected.
In response, Cho appeared on SBS Radio's "Kim Taehyun's Political Show" on the same day, stating, "Do you think it is normal for those who support insurrection or who opposed the impeachment of the main instigators of insurrection to hold positions such as National Assembly Vice Speaker or other parliamentary posts?" He added, "I was simply saying that those who support insurrection should not hold parliamentary posts."
He continued, "The election of the National Assembly leadership is a free vote by the lawmakers," and argued, "To judge right or wrong in this matter is an infringement on lawmakers' political rights and voting rights."
Cho also strongly opposed a statement made by Leader Jang during a closed Supreme Council meeting the previous day, in which Jang said, "For serious violations, we should amend the party constitution and regulations, if necessary, to permanently ban reinstatement."
He called this "a very dangerous remark," and pointed out, "The real serious violator is Leader Jang Donghyuk himself, who lied to the public and party members." Cho emphasized, "He should keep his promise to step down if he lost in the June 3 local elections."
