Yongin Special City in Gyeonggi Province, led by Mayor Sangil Lee, has successfully attracted investment from global semiconductor equipment manufacturer Applied Materials, further accelerating the creation of a "semiconductor mega cluster." With the decision by Applied Materials to invest in Yongin following ASML, Lam Research, and Tokyo Electron, all four of the world's leading semiconductor equipment companies will now have a presence in Yongin.

Under this agreement, Applied Materials Korea—the Korean subsidiary of global semiconductor equipment maker Applied Materials, led by CEO Park Kwangsun—will construct a large field office for equipment and technology operation and management on a 13,305-square-meter site within the cooperative complex at the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster in Wonsam-myeon, Cheoin-gu. This facility will serve as a forward base, providing rapid equipment maintenance and technical support essential for semiconductor production lines.
Yongin City and Applied Materials Korea plan to establish a foundation for semiconductor equipment technology support and maintenance services through the construction of this facility. Additionally, they will collaborate to operate industry-academia partnership programs with local universities to nurture semiconductor professionals.
Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Applied Materials is a global leader in the core equipment for semiconductor processes such as deposition, etching, inspection, and metrology. Since its establishment in Korea in 1989, the local subsidiary has been supporting the development of the domestic semiconductor industry for more than 35 years.

Industry insiders expect further investments from global materials, components, and equipment (MCE) companies.
Mayor Sangil Lee stated, "We welcome the investment from a global semiconductor equipment company in Yongin," adding, "Yongin City will spare no effort in providing the necessary administrative support to ensure the smooth construction of the equipment and technology operation facility."
He went on to say, "It is very meaningful that Applied Materials Korea has agreed to provide practical knowledge and hands-on experience to students interested in the semiconductor sector through industry-academia partnerships with local universities. The city will actively serve as a bridge to ensure the smooth operation of these programs."
