Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City Council Welcomes President Lee Jaemyung's Support for Semiconductor Ordinance
"The First Ordinance of the Integrated Council Marks the Initial Step Toward Fostering Future Industries"
"Continuous Monitoring of Government Commitments, Including 800 Trillion Won Investment and Relocation of Public Institutions"
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Integrated City Council has welcomed President Lee Jaemyung's remarks regarding the ordinance supporting strategic investment in the semiconductor sector.
On July 6, Jin-Nam Kim, spokesperson for the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Integrated City Council, issued a statement saying, "We regard it as highly meaningful that President Lee Jaemyung has expressed his appreciation for and support of the intent behind the council's first ordinance, the 'Strategic Investment Support Ordinance for Semiconductors,' and that he shares our vision."
Spokesperson Kim emphasized, "The very first legislative action chosen by the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Integrated City Council, Korea’s first integrated metropolitan council, was to foster the semiconductor industry. This was both the council’s initial promise and its first concrete step toward supporting the creation of Korea’s second semiconductor production hub in line with Samsung Electronics and SK hynix's large-scale investment trends and the government’s semiconductor development strategy. Through this, we aim to build future growth engines and create quality jobs."
He further assessed, "This is also in line with the government’s policy to achieve balanced national development and move beyond the current concentration in the capital region."
The council stressed that government support for fostering the semiconductor industry must translate into tangible results.
Spokesperson Kim stated, "What matters most is what happens from now on. The promised investment of 800 trillion won by the government and corporations, the 20 trillion won in fiscal incentives, and various support measures such as the second relocation of public institutions must all be implemented without delay so that the region can experience real change."
He continued, "The Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Integrated City Council will continuously monitor whether the government's pledges are producing concrete outcomes, and we will take joint responsibility for their implementation through necessary legislation and budgetary support."
He also added, "Going forward, we will continue to work closely with the government, joining forces across party lines to cultivate future strategic industries such as AI and semiconductors and to revitalize the regional economy."
