'National Industrial Complex Briefing' to Be Held at Gyeonggi Provincial Council on July 8
"Are They Trying to Stir Up Trouble Again?... Citizens Will Not Tolerate It"
Sangil Lee, Mayor of Yongin Special City, strongly criticized some groups for raising issues surrounding Samsung Electronics' advanced system semiconductor national industrial complex, stating, "Attempts to undermine the national industrial complex must stop."
On July 4, through his social media, Mayor Lee said, "Samsung Electronics' advanced system semiconductor national industrial complex, which will be established in Idong and Namsa-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin City, is a key driver for the future growth of South Korea and will be central to maintaining the country’s unrivaled edge in the semiconductor industry. Over the past seven months, we have resolutely responded together with citizens to attempts to undermine and disrupt the development plan for the national industrial complex."
He continued, "Since December last year through June this year, I have delivered countless messages emphasizing the importance of the national industrial complex in position statements, Facebook posts, and numerous media interviews. The national industrial complex project, which was decided under the previous government, was left in controversy and confusion for some time, but the current government has finally decided to proceed with the project as originally planned."
Lee also stated, "Samsung Electronics has made it clear that, instead of making large new investments in regions like Honam, it is firmly committed to building all six planned semiconductor production lines (fabs) at the Yongin national industrial complex. Since the legitimacy of the development procedures was recognized by a ruling of the Seoul Administrative Court in January this year, the controversies surrounding the project have in fact been resolved."
Mentioning that an explanatory session regarding the national industrial complex will be held at the Gyeonggi Provincial Council on July 8, he pointed out, "Even now, at a time when debates and confusion around the Yongin national industrial complex have been clearly resolved, some people are gathering once again to stir up controversy."

Mayor Lee further argued, "Up to now, disruptions to the Yongin national industrial complex project have been caused by these groups, members of the 'National Action' affiliated powerline opposition organizations, officials from the Prime Minister's Office Social Reform Committee, and a significant number of lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party. As a result, the project to prepare the site for the complex has been delayed by at least six months from the original plan."
He added, "I want to ask whether these renewed attempts to obstruct the national industrial complex project are truly justified. The national industrial complex project, which is vital for South Korea's semiconductor competitiveness and the future of Yongin, must proceed as planned without further disruptions, and citizens of sound judgment will not tolerate any more obstruction."
