Samsung Electronics Union: "One in Three Considering Job Change... Let's Form a Regular Consultative Body"
Launch of DS Division Policy Committee with 25 Members
Union Demands Written Response from Management by July 8
According to a survey conducted by the Samsung Group Super Enterprise Labor Union Samsung Electronics Branch (hereinafter referred to as the Super Enterprise Union), one out of every three union members is considering changing jobs.
According to an official letter the Super Enterprise Union recently sent to management on July 2, 37% of respondents in last month's survey on job-switching intentions said they were willing to apply for new or experienced positions at competing companies. The reasons cited for considering a job change included 'distrust of management,' 'the performance bonus system,' 'organizational culture,' and 'wages and employee benefits.'
The Super Enterprise Union stated, "The fact that union members have expressed their intention to leave the company clearly shows the need for improvement," adding, "There is not enough time to resolve these issues through next year's wage and collective bargaining alone."
In response, the Super Enterprise Union has proposed forming a regular consultative body to discuss key issues in advance and has launched a semiconductor (DS) division policy committee composed of 25 members. The policy committee consists of six members from the Memory Business Unit, six from the Foundry Business Unit, five from the System LSI Business Unit, and eight from general organizations.
The Super Enterprise Union has requested that management provide a written response regarding the establishment of the regular consultative body by July 8.
The Super Enterprise Union also stated the previous day that the union should participate in decision-making related to the government's "mega project" initiative, proposing "a tripartite consultative forum bringing together the government, the company, and the union."
As Samsung Electronics is set to invest a total of 425 trillion won in the southwestern region alone—including two new semiconductor fabs and an artificial intelligence (AI) data center—and an unprecedented 2,655 trillion won nationwide, the union argues that company employees, as key stakeholders and on-site experts, should also be involved in the decision-making process. The union also implicitly called on the government and management to guarantee living conditions and fair treatment for employees in the Honam region.
Meanwhile, concerns have arisen in the business community that uncertainties could emerge in such large-scale investment projects, making labor-management consultation and coordination an important task in ensuring the progress of the government-led mega project.
