A recent public opinion poll showed that President Lee Jaemyung’s approval rating for state affairs reached 58%. The downward trend in his approval rating, which had fallen to the high 50% range after the local elections, has come to a halt.
According to the regular National Barometer Survey (NBS), released on July 2 by Embrain Public, Kstat Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research, President Lee’s approval rating for state affairs rose by 1 percentage point compared to the previous survey conducted in the second week of June. The survey was conducted via mobile phone interviews with 1,000 men and women aged 18 and older nationwide from June 29 to July 1. The margin of error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate was 20.0%. Negative assessments rose by 2 percentage points from the previous week’s survey, reaching 35%.
Before the local elections, President Lee’s approval rating was in the high 60% range, but it dropped to the high 50% range after the elections.
In terms of party approval ratings, support for the Democratic Party of Korea has remained in the low 40% range since the local elections, while support for the People Power Party has declined. The Democratic Party’s approval rating increased by 1 percentage point from the previous survey to 42%. The People Power Party’s approval rating fell by 5 percentage points to 20%.
Regarding current issues in the public opinion survey, there remain significant public suspicions about election fraud. While 47% of respondents believe there was no election fraud, 42% believe there was.
On the introduction of a volunteer military service system, 45% of respondents said they support it, while 44% said they oppose it. There was little difference between men and women regarding support for the system, but opposition was higher among men (50%) than women (39%).
