Korea Electric Power Corporation Proactively Provides 'Electricity Bill Welfare Discounts'... KRW 180,000 Per Person Benefit Last Year
Providing Welfare Discounts Directly to Ensure No One Misses Out Due to Lack of Awareness
KRW 714.1 Billion in Electricity Bill Discounts Provided Last Year
In order to guarantee the basic energy rights of socially disadvantaged groups and address gaps in the electricity bill welfare discount system, Korea Electric Power Corporation is proactively reaching out to these groups to provide welfare discount benefits. The total amount of electricity bill welfare discounts last year was KRW 714.1 billion, which translates to an average annual benefit of approximately KRW 180,000 per person.
On July 1, Korea Electric Power Corporation announced that it is collaborating with relevant organizations to directly identify and support customers eligible for welfare discounts, so that more people can benefit from the program.
The electricity bill welfare discount is a system that provides support to recipients of basic living allowances, the near poor, and persons with disabilities. In particular, during the summer months when cooling demand increases, the discount limit is expanded, allowing for up to KRW 20,000 per month in electricity bill reductions.
Korea Electric Power Corporation works with related agencies, such as the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, to share information and identify eligible customers. For those who have not yet received benefits, the company provides guidance through on-site visits, phone calls, or text messages. As a result of these efforts, approximately 85,000 new customers have received benefits over the three-year period from 2023 to 2025.
Additionally, Korea Electric Power Corporation is implementing not only welfare discounts but also an 'electricity bill installment payment system' to ease the burden of electricity bill payments for the public. Residential households, small business owners, and root enterprises can spread their summer electricity bill payments over 2 to 6 months. Korea Electric Power Corporation expects that this will help reduce the temporary increase in electricity bill burdens caused by heat waves.
