"The AI Policy Center will serve as a crucial bridge connecting the AI industry with the field."

Hyungchul Kim, President of the National Information Society Agency (NIA), stated this at the opening ceremony of the AI Policy Center held in the main conference room of NIA's Seoul office on June 30. He added, "As the AI Policy Center, we will further strengthen our expertise and execution capabilities in national AI policy and legislation."

The AI Policy Center is a specialized institution established in accordance with the "Framework Act on the Promotion and Trust-Based Development of Artificial Intelligence (AI Framework Act)," which came into effect in January of this year. The center comprehensively carries out tasks necessary for developing AI-related policies and establishing and disseminating international norms.

President Kim expressed his aspirations, saying, "We aim to become a robust professional institution that supports all aspects of national AI policy, from establishing basic and implementation plans, to conducting impact assessments and analyses, as well as legal and institutional research."

Kim began his remarks by saying, "Today marks a special moment as NIA officially launches the AI Policy Center." He emphasized the significance, adding, "As the first and only public institution to be designated independently, we feel a heavy sense of responsibility."

He went on to say, "No matter how good a policy is, it is meaningless if it does not reach the field," and continued, "The Center will build trust between policy design and execution, as well as between technology and people. We will do our utmost to ensure that the AI Policy Center becomes a solid stepping stone toward the national goal of becoming one of the top three global AI powerhouses."

President Kim added, "AI presents great opportunities for our society, but at the same time, it brings many challenges that we must address together. The AI Policy Center will contribute to building a trustworthy AI ecosystem that the public can rely on, based on a balance between the advancement of AI technology and social acceptance."

Jaemyung Ryu, 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "I hope the AI Policy Center will play a pivotal role as a hub that closely connects policy and legislation with the field, contributing to the achievement of 'AI G3.'"

The opening ceremony of the AI Policy Center was attended by Vice Minister Ryu; Sanghoon Song, Head of the National AI Strategy Committee Support Group; Junhee Cho, President of the Korea Artificial Intelligence and Software Industry Association (KOSA); Jeongsu Kim, President of the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses; and Kieun Kim, Head of the National AI Research Hub, among others.

Going forward, the AI Policy Center will carry out tasks such as: ▲ AI policy development and technical support ▲ impact assessments and analyses related to the expansion of AI usage ▲ trend analysis to support policy development ▲ future forecasting and legal/institutional research by sector.
