Korean Bar Association Selects Yang Sunyoung, Yoon Seokjun, and Lim Irang as Excellent Lawyers
33rd Excellent Lawyer Award Ceremony Held
Attorneys Yang Sunyoung (32nd Judicial Research and Training Institute class), Yoon Seokjun (aged 37), and Lim Irang (7th Bar Examination) have been awarded the Excellent Lawyer Award by the Korean Bar Association.
The Korean Bar Association announced on June 29 at the Korean Bar Association Hall in Seocho-dong, Seoul, that it held the "33rd Excellent Lawyer Award Ceremony." This year's honorees were selected after a rigorous review process, based on recommendations for lawyers who demonstrated outstanding work in the areas of justice and human rights, improvement of legal systems, exemplary advocacy, advancement of legal culture, and public interest activities.
Attorney Yang was recognized for her contributions to enhancing legal systems, particularly in advocating for the introduction of attorney-client privilege. She participated in drafting amendments to the Attorney-at-Law Act and actively shared her opinions as a member of the Ministry of Justice's Special Committee for Improvement of the Attorney System. In particular, she took on an appeal case regarding the seizure of documents exchanged between a client and an attorney by investigative authorities, leading to a Supreme Court decision that explicitly recognized attorney-client privilege.
Attorney Yoon contributed to preventing the outflow of national wealth by representing in international investment arbitration (ISDS) cases. He was responsible for the international tax aspects in the Lone Star investment arbitration case and secured the complete dismissal of all claims by Lone Star. He also succeeded in overturning an arbitration award that had partially recognized the Republic of Korea's liability in the field of financial regulation. In addition, during the revision of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board's International Arbitration Rules, he successfully established provisions related to "green arbitration" aimed at minimizing environmental destruction.
