Mayor Lee: "Why Nitpick 'Public Discourse' for Yongin but Stay Silent on Hundreds of Trillions Invested in Honam?"
Lee Sangil, Yongin Mayor, Slams 'Semiconductor Double Standard'
"Is the Social Grand Reform Committee under the Prime Minister's Office Merely a Vanguard for the Regime?"
"The Same Standards Must Be Applied to Presidential Office-Led Semicon
Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin Special City, has publicly criticized the Social Grand Reform Committee under the Prime Minister's Office, stating that it is "acting as an advance guard for the political objectives of the administration." He pointed out that while the committee is blocking the Yongin National Semiconductor Industrial Complex, a project decided during the previous administration, citing "lack of public discussion," it remains silent on the large-scale investment being promoted in the Honam region by the current administration, revealing a "double standard."
On the 26th, Mayor Lee stated on his social media, "The Social Grand Reform Committee has insisted that the policy regarding the national semiconductor industrial complex should be determined through public discussion," and criticized, "Currently, the government is pushing for large-scale investments in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, with the President meeting with the heads of Samsung and SK Group, but why is the committee not demanding transparent public discussion and instead staying silent?"
Mayor Lee further argued, "If the committee's call for public discussion is to have any credibility, the same principle must be applied to the new semiconductor investment plan in the Honam region, which appears to be led by the Blue House."
Recently, in both political and industrial circles, there has been speculation that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are considering semiconductor investments worth hundreds of trillions of won in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions, with detailed plans expected to be announced soon. Referring to this, Mayor Lee pointed out, "With an investment plan worth hundreds of trillions being discussed, at the very least, the committee should demand that the validity of this investment be examined through public discussion, as a matter of consistency between words and actions."
Previously, on the 22nd, the Social Grand Reform Committee issued a statement directly targeting the Yongin Idong and Namsa Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex, claiming, "The current national semiconductor industrial policy was announced during the previous administration, omitting a sufficient public discussion process, which led to public disappointment."
In response, Mayor Lee directly criticized, "It is hypocritical for the committee to nitpick the Yongin project, which was confirmed as a national policy after extensive review and evaluation, while remaining silent on the Honam investment plan that the current administration is unilaterally pushing forward."
He further emphasized, "Given that there are complaints about the concentration of investment in the Honam region from Yeongnam and Jeonbuk, if the committee wants to maintain consistency, it should also demand 'social consensus' from the President and the Blue House, as that is its proper role."
