Jeonnam Police to Launch Special Crackdown on Drunk Driving During Vacation Season... Intensive Enforcement in July and August
The Jeonnam Provincial Police will launch a special crackdown on drunk driving for two months starting in July to prevent accidents during the summer vacation season.
The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency and the Jeonnam Autonomous Police Committee announced on June 26 that they will conduct a special crackdown on drunk driving from July 1 to August 31.
As of June 24, there have been 179 drunk driving traffic accidents in the Jeonnam region this year, a decrease of 15.1% compared to 211 accidents during the same period last year. However, the number of fatalities caused by drunk driving remains unchanged at two, the same as last year, indicating that there is still loss of life. The police believe that drunk driving may increase during the festive vacation period and plan to take proactive enforcement measures.
The police will conduct "spot-check" crackdowns by frequently changing the locations of checkpoints, including resorts, entertainment and nightlife districts, school zones, golf courses, and highway tollgate entrances and exits. In addition, to prevent driving under the influence of a hangover or with alcohol consumed during meals, the police plan to carry out constant enforcement operations regardless of time—both during morning commute and lunchtime, as well as day and night hours.
Furthermore, in areas around intersections and entertainment districts, the police will expand public awareness campaigns to foster a culture of zero tolerance for drunk driving, using electronic display boards (VMS), banners, leaflets, and various campaigns.
The Jeonnam Provincial Police also plan to use drug test kits to crack down on drug-impaired driving, which has recently been included as a target of enforcement. In the event of a serious traffic accident caused by drunk driving, the police will apply the charge of gross negligent homicide under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. For habitual drunk drivers, strong measures such as vehicle seizure will be taken, as part of a strict response policy.
