Korean Bar Association, Ministry of Unification, and Ministry of Justice to Hold Symposium on Improving Legal Support for North Korean Defectors
Seeking Division of Roles and Collaboration Methods
The Korean Bar Association announced on the 25th that, in cooperation with the Ministry of Unification and the Ministry of Justice, it will hold a symposium titled “Current Status and Directions for Improvement of the Legal Service Support System for North Korean Defectors” at the Bar Association Hall in Seocho-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of the 26th.
This symposium has been organized to review the current state of legal support services provided to North Korean defectors, and to discuss the issues and directions for improvement in the existing support system. The aim is to establish a more stable and effective delivery system for legal support by exploring the division of roles and collaboration methods among the Korean Bar Association, the Ministry of Unification, and the Ministry of Justice.
The overall moderator of the symposium will be Attorney Jaemin Cho of Jo Anjeon Law Office, who is a member of the Korean Bar Association’s Legal Support Committee for North Korean Defectors. Attorney Kyuhae Jeon of OnYul will present on “Current Status and Issues of the Legal Support Service Delivery System for North Korean Defectors,” examining the current state and key problems of the service delivery system. Attorney Wonyeon Park of Law Firm Roberry will discuss “Measures to Improve the Legal Support Delivery System for North Korean Defectors,” proposing ways to build a legal support system centered on cooperation among the Korean Bar Association, the Ministry of Unification, and the Ministry of Justice.

For the designated discussion, Attorney Wonwoo Tae of Law Firm Logos will serve as the moderator. Panelists include Deputy Director Kyungtae Han of the Unification Legal Affairs Division at the Ministry of Justice; Deputy Director Seonghwan Kim of the Self-Reliance Support Division at the Ministry of Unification; Head Seongmo Kim of the Social Adaptation Department at the Korea Hana Foundation; and Attorney Jungyun Kim of Law Firm OYUN. The panelists plan to focus their discussion on specific alternatives for building a collaborative system among related organizations and increasing the effectiveness of legal services.
