He explained, "It happened just as I arrived at the hotel after finishing a broadcast in Dallas," and added, "Because it was my second time staying at this hotel, I let my guard down, which turned out to be a mistake."
According to Kim, while he briefly set his bag down on a hotel lobby chair to check in, a thief who had been hiding behind a pillar reached out and snatched the bag. Although the incident took place right in front of the front desk, neither the nearby security personnel nor the hotel staff noticed what happened. He added, "In the end, the thief calmly walked away past our broadcasting team and escaped."
Kim reported the incident to the police and used the 'Find My MacBook' feature to track the location, traveling approximately 20 kilometers by car. At one point, the location was shown as a Walmart, so he searched inside for the thief. Later, when the location changed to a vacant lot behind the Walmart, the responding Guadalajara police searched a trash can and recovered the MacBook and an iPad. He explained that it appeared the thief became aware of the tracking and abandoned the devices before fleeing.
He also revealed, "The thief also attempted to make a purchase with my Travel Wallet card, which had a zero balance, at Subway the next day, leaving another trace," and stated that local police investigations and a report to the embassy are currently underway.
Kim said, "I was unable to recover my wallet, ID card, credit cards, cash, clothes, sunglasses, or earphones, but I am truly relieved that I managed to retrieve my MacBook filled with broadcasting materials." He continued, "At the time, I was determined to recover the World Cup materials, but chasing after the thief in a place with unstable security was extremely reckless and dangerous. I strongly advise others not to attempt such a pursuit themselves."
He added, "Although I have a clear photo of the thief’s face, I will not post it for safety reasons. However, those in the area should remember that even hotel lobbies are not completely safe, and it is especially important to be wary of thieves who may be hiding."
He further advised, "If you ever become a victim of theft, do not try to handle it yourself. The safest course of action is to immediately report the incident to the Mexican police or the embassy. I hope everyone stays safe and enjoys the rest of the World Cup."
