KOSDAQ Ends Higher as Biopharmaceutical Stocks Rally
The KOSPI index recovered from the previous day's sharp decline, closing in the upper 8,400 range. The KOSDAQ index also ended the session having regained the 900 mark.
On June 24, the KOSPI index closed at 8,471.02, up 267.18 points (3.26%) from the previous trading day. Foreign investors recorded a net sell of 5,153,237 million won, while individual investors and institutions also posted net sells of 2,891,705 million won and 2,134,451 million won, respectively.
By industry, all sectors finished higher except for securities (-0.69%), finance (-0.59%), medical precision instruments (-0.50%), and telecommunications (-0.03%). Pharmaceuticals recorded the highest increase at 7.57%, followed by electrical and electronics (4.57%), retail (3.28%), transportation and warehousing (2.39%), and chemicals (2.26%).
Among the top stocks by market capitalization, Samsung Electronics stood out with a significant price increase. Samsung Electronics ended trading at 340,500 won, up 9.8% (30,500 won) from the previous day, reclaiming its position as the number one company by market capitalization. SK hynix rose 0.9% (25,000 won) to 258,000 won. Bio stocks such as Samsung Biologics (+8.8%) and Celltrion (+7.6%) also closed with substantial gains. On the other hand, Hyosung Heavy Industries (-7.2%), LG Innotek (-3.4%), Samsung SDI (-2.0%), SK Square (-1.8%), and Samsung Electro-Mechanics (-1.3%) ended lower.
Kyungmin Lee, a researcher at Daishin Securities, stated, "The KOSPI index turned strong during the session as bargain hunting emerged following yesterday's sharp decline. In particular, Samsung Electronics saw a notable surge driven by the news of a 9 trillion won share buyback, regaining its top market capitalization position and widening the gap with SK hynix."
The KOSDAQ index also closed at 909.30, up 17.78 points (1.99%) from the previous trading day. Institutions recorded a net buy of 344,112 million won, while foreign investors and individuals posted net sells of 3,475 million won and 359,272 million won, respectively.
By sector, most ended strong, including general services (+6.17%), pharmaceuticals (+5.48%), finance (+2.59%), and medical precision instruments (+3.31%). On the contrary, publishing and media replication (-1.42%), retail (-1.13%), other manufacturing (-0.34%), transportation and warehousing (-0.26%), metals (-0.15%), and electrical and electronics (-0.12%) closed weaker.

Among the top stocks by market capitalization on the KOSDAQ, biopharmaceuticals showed a marked uptrend. Peptone (+14.5%), Alteogen (+11.5%), Ligakem Bio (+10.5%), and ABL Bio (+7.2%) recorded significant increases. In addition, Ecopro (+4.5%), Rainbow Robotics (+2.3%), and Ecopro BM (+1.0%) also finished strong. Conversely, HPSP (-4.5%), D&D Pharmatech (-4.2%), Padu (-3.9%), Hanamicron (-2.8%), Simmtech (-2.3%), and Seojin System (-2.1%) closed with declines.
