The company stated, "We detected a cybersecurity incident a few weeks ago and immediately activated our response procedures," adding, "There has been no impact on business operations."
The incident came to light after data believed to have been stolen from Tata Electronics was posted on a hacker forum. The hackers claimed to have acquired more than 204,300 files, totaling over 630GB of materials.
TechCrunch reviewed some of the files and found materials that appeared to include Apple supplier specification documents and Tesla manufacturing-related documents. However, the authenticity, sources, and full extent of the data could not be independently verified.
Rajshekhar Rajaharia, a cybersecurity researcher in India, asserted that the leaked data contained Outlook email conversations, information related to SAP, and documents pertaining to clients such as Apple and Tesla.
Tata acknowledged that the hacking incident occurred but refused to answer questions regarding what data was leaked, whether client information was included, or if clients had been notified.
Previously, a foreign news outlet reported that Tata had informed iPhone factory employees of the data breach last week, and that Apple had also begun its own investigation into the incident. The hackers are reported to have demanded a financial ransom from the company.
Founded in 2020, Tata Electronics is considered a core company in India's strategy to foster the semiconductor and electronics industries. In 2023, it fully entered iPhone production by acquiring the Indian operations of Taiwan-based Wistron, formerly an Apple partner. Subsequently, Tata also secured a 60% stake in the Indian subsidiary of Pegatron, another Apple partner.
