Genexine Highlights DNA Vaccine Platform Amid Spread of Ebola Infections Among Healthcare Workers in Congo
On June 22, Genexine announced that its participation in DNA vaccine research has regained attention following the outbreak of Ebola and the spread of mass infections among healthcare workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on June 19 that, during the ongoing Ebola outbreak, 75 healthcare workers had been infected, with 17 of them having died. The WHO explained that the main causes of the mass infections were a lack of protective equipment for medical staff and the failure to detect the infectious disease at an early stage.
This Ebola outbreak is known to have been caused by the 'Bundibugyo Ebola virus,' a type different from those targeted in previous studies. Currently, there are no approved preventive vaccines for this particular virus.
In this context, Genexine explained that the results of its collaborative research on an Ebola DNA vaccine, developed together with Inovio Pharmaceuticals in the United States and researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, are once again drawing interest as a potential infectious disease response technology.
This DNA vaccine was evaluated for safety and immunogenicity in a phase 1 clinical trial, and the study found that it induced a strong antibody response and immune cell response in humans. Notably, most participants developed an immune response capable of recognizing the Ebola virus, and a robust T-cell immune response—which plays a crucial role in eliminating infected cells—was also strongly induced.
The company stated that the currently spreading Bundibugyo Ebola strain is different from the Ebola virus types used in previous research, so it is difficult to immediately use existing vaccines as a preventive measure. However, it emphasized that the confirmation of a strong T-cell immune response in humans during the phase 1 clinical study is significant for establishing future Ebola response strategies.
A Genexine representative said, "In situations like the current one, where infections among healthcare workers are ongoing, the importance of immune responses that help reduce the risk of severe progression and aid recovery after viral exposure, in addition to preventive strategies that block infection itself, is increasing." The representative added, "The T-cell immune response observed in previous studies could serve as an important scientific foundation for protection strategies targeting high-risk groups such as healthcare workers, as well as the development of next-generation Ebola vaccines."
The representative continued, "The DNA vaccine platform allows for the relatively rapid design of candidate substances when new virus types are identified, and it also offers advantages in terms of storage and transportation." They added, "The possibility of developing a next-generation DNA vaccine to respond to the currently circulating Bundibugyo Ebola is also under consideration."
