Landslide Risk Alert Raised to "Caution" in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang

The Korea Forest Service raised the landslide risk alert level from "Attention" to "Caution" for Gangwon and North Gyeongsang provinces as of 8:30 a.m. on June 20.
This measure was taken in response to the heavy rain advisories issued for parts of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang provinces on the morning of June 20, and forecasts predicting 50 to 120 mm of rainfall (with more than 200 mm expected in northern mountainous areas and more than 150 mm in central mountainous and central-northern coastal regions of Gangwon) in mountainous and coastal areas of Gangwon through the morning of June 21. Other inland areas of Gangwon are expected to receive 30 to 80 mm of rain.
The landslide risk alert has four levels: Attention, Caution, Warning, and Severe. Fifteen other metropolitan cities and provinces, including Seoul, Busan, and Daegu, will remain at the Attention level.

Heavy rain advisories were issued and then sequentially lifted for Yeongju, Sangju, Yeongdeok, and Uljin in North Gyeongsang, while heavy rain warnings remain in effect for Ulleungdo and Dokdo. In Gangwon, heavy rain advisories are still in place for Taebaek, Inje, and for flat and mountainous areas such as Gangneung, Sokcho, and Samcheok on the east coast. In particular, strong winds of at least 15 meters per second (over 20 meters per second in mountainous areas) are being recorded in the Yeongdong region, along with the rain.
