Discussions on Peace on the Korean Peninsula and Korea-U.S. Relations
President Lee Jae-myung, who attended the Group of Seven (G7) summit held in Evian, France and is now returning to Korea, stated that he had in-depth discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump on issues regarding peace on the Korean Peninsula and the Korea-U.S. relationship during a separate dinner and luncheon.

This message from President Lee highlights that the interactions between the two leaders during the G7 summit went beyond a simple meeting and led to substantial exchanges of views on the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the Korea-U.S. alliance. President Lee and President Trump sat next to each other and had a close conversation for about two hours during the official G7 dinner the previous day, and naturally interacted on several occasions throughout the summit to exchange their views on the Korea-U.S. relationship and key issues.
In particular, the Korean Peninsula issue was treated as a major agenda item. According to the Presidential Office, President Lee expressed his hope that President Trump would continue to pay attention and stay engaged so that sustainable peace can be established on the Korean Peninsula, following his efforts in the Middle East. President Trump expressed his intention to play any necessary role in advancing the Korean Peninsula issue. The two leaders also discussed ways to expand mutually beneficial cooperation, including in the shipbuilding sector, and shared views on the importance of Korea-U.S.-Japan trilateral cooperation.

President Lee wrote, “During the last luncheon today, President Trump gave me the pen he had been using for signatures as a gift,” adding, “I think it might be because he remembered receiving the pen I used during our first summit.” During their first Korea-U.S. summit last year, President Trump had received the pen President Lee had used for signing as a gift on the spot; this time, President Trump gave his own pen to President Lee.
A scene illustrating the closeness between the two leaders was also introduced. President Lee said, “At last night’s dinner, while talking about golf, President Trump said he would play golf with me and my wife, and my wife got him to promise by linking pinkies. After today’s luncheon, as we parted, he again said we must play golf together.” He added, “I thought he was just making small talk, but it seems I should start preparing.”
