"Korea Ranks as the World's No. 3 Cyber Threat Target"... Google Launches AI Security Platform (Comprehensive)
Powered by Gemini: Automated Threat Detection, Investigation, and Response
Operates in Seoul Region, Ensuring Compliance with Server Regulations
Google Cloud is launching its artificial intelligence (AI)-based security platform in Korea. As the threat of cyberattacks powered by high-performance AI models continues to grow, Google Cloud plans to provide agentic AI-based security services to customers in the financial and public sectors.
At a media briefing held on the morning of the 17th at the Google Korea office in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Google Cloud announced that it will introduce the Google Security Operations Platform (SecOps) to its Seoul region. By deploying AI-powered agents for security data collection and threat analysis, the platform delivers solutions needed for enterprises to respond to security threats. The Seoul region refers to Google's data centers established in Seoul and the greater metropolitan area to provide cloud services.

He added, "We are fulfilling the data sovereignty requirements of Korean companies while directly providing Google's AI technology and threat intelligence capabilities." He also emphasized, "Beyond simply responding to threats, we are implementing a proactive cyber defense system that reduces investigation time from about 30 minutes to just one minute, achieving an unprecedented speed."
According to Google Cloud's own analysis, Korea ranks as the third most targeted country for cyberthreats globally. Mahapatra explained, "Korea is not only targeted by state-backed attackers due to its geopolitical background, but as the value of domestic companies rises, it is also becoming a target for cybercriminals seeking financial gain."
The core of the Google Security Operations Platform is Google's large language model (LLM), Gemini. The platform, equipped with Gemini, enables automated threat response. Its security features also support intuitive drag-and-drop functions, parallel tasks, and version control, allowing companies to quickly create guidelines outlining the order of response actions in the event of a cyber incident and automate their processes.
Clients in highly regulated industries can also leverage this solution to store and process all security logs and analysis data domestically. Since the Google Security Operations Platform is operated on domestic servers, it complies with regulations that require data to be stored within Korea.
Google Cloud especially anticipates significant adoption of its Security Operations Platform in the financial sector. Recently, the Financial Services Commission relaxed network separation regulations for the financial industry, specifically for security purposes using AI. Google Cloud plans to strengthen cooperation with major domestic cloud security partners such as MegazoneCloud, LG CNS, and Bespin Global to support the adoption of the Google Security Operations Platform.
Meanwhile, in response to Korean companies facing restrictions on participating in Anthropic's Project Glasswing due to recent U.S. government export controls on Mythos-5 and Fable-5, Google Cloud has suggested an alternative approach that combines lower-tier models.
Mahapatra acknowledged the importance of industry collaborations like Glasswing, stating, "Even without direct access to top-tier frontier AI models, by integrating an appropriate agentic harness with lower-tier models, it is possible to achieve results comparable to those from leading models." An agentic harness refers to a system design technique that enables AI agents to operate reliably in a given environment using large language models (LLMs).
