German Chancellor Gifts Trump Jersey with Number '47' for His Birthday
A Series of Gifts for Trump...
Emphasizing Closeness
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz gave U.S. President Donald Trump a World Cup jersey from the German national soccer team as a birthday gift.
According to foreign media outlets such as the New York Post on June 16 (local time), Chancellor Merz met President Trump at the Group of Seven (G7) summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France, and presented him with a German soccer team jersey featuring Trump’s name and the number '47'. The number '47' appears to reference the fact that Trump is serving as the 47th president of the United States. After receiving the gift, President Trump shook hands with Chancellor Merz and held up the jersey for the press.
Since taking office in May, Chancellor Merz has prepared a variety of gifts during his two visits to the White House. These included a replica of President Trump's German-born grandfather's birth certificate framed in gold, a golf club, and a copy of the 1785 Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Prussia. The latest jersey gift is seen as an effort to highlight the bond between the two leaders by taking advantage of the ongoing World Cup in the United States.
However, the relationship between the two leaders has not always been smooth. Back in April, Chancellor Merz commented, "It is quite clear that the United States entered this war without a strategy," and added, "Iran is much stronger than expected, and the United States lacks a convincing strategy even at the negotiating table."
In response, President Trump, who had previously maintained a good relationship with Chancellor Merz, changed his stance. He directly criticized Chancellor Merz, saying, "He doesn't know what he is talking about," and "It is no surprise that Germany is struggling economically." Following this, he also announced plans to reduce the number of U.S. troops stationed in Germany by 5,000. This move is widely seen as a retaliatory measure in response to Chancellor Merz’s criticism of the United States.

Meanwhile, it was reported that ahead of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit next month, Chancellor Merz is planning to convene the leaders of four European countries in an effort to build a smoother relationship with President Trump over defense cost-sharing. The daily Berliner Morgenpost commented on the birthday gift, "It seemed as if Merz had been waiting for a moment alone with the U.S. president," and added, "Decisive weeks are beginning in which he must accommodate Trump’s mood."
