Jang Convenes Emergency People Power Party Supreme Council Meeting to Discuss Seoul Election Re-election Appeal
The People Power Party convened an emergency Supreme Council meeting on the afternoon of June 15 to discuss filing a comprehensive appeal for a re-election in the Seoul elections.
Jang Donghyuk, leader of the People Power Party, told reporters at the National Assembly that "the deadline to file an election appeal for the 9th nationwide local elections is June 17," adding, "We will convene a Supreme Council meeting around 5:30 p.m. to discuss the matter."
This Supreme Council meeting was held to discuss filing an appeal for a re-election with the National Election Commission regarding the Seoul elections, where a shortage of ballot papers occurred during the recent local elections. Regarding this, Leader Jang stated, "We may challenge the entire Seoul elections, or we may choose to separate and contest only a few of them."
According to Article 219 of the current Public Official Election Act, voters or political parties who have objections regarding the validity of metropolitan or provincial governor elections may file an appeal with the National Election Commission within 14 days of the election, with the Chairperson of the National Election Commission as the respondent. In addition, the National Election Commission, upon receiving such an appeal, must make a decision within 60 days from the date of receipt.

Since the National Election Commission has already determined that the recent shortage of ballot papers does not constitute grounds for a re-election, assessments suggest that the likelihood of the People Power Party's appeal being accepted is low. However, if the appeal is dismissed or rejected, it would be possible to file a lawsuit with the Supreme Court with the Chairperson of the National Election Commission as the defendant, and this move is interpreted as keeping that option in mind.
