Classes and Student Management Modeled After International Schools
A head of a language academy in his 50s, who gathered students subject to compulsory education under the guise of an ordinary language institute and effectively operated an unauthorized international school, has been referred to the prosecution.
On June 15, Gwangju Nambu Police Station announced that they had forwarded Mr. A, a head in his 50s, to the prosecution without detention on charges of operating an unauthorized educational facility in violation of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
Mr. A is accused of operating a language institute in Bongseon-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju over the past six years since 2020, recruiting around 100 elementary and middle school students and providing an educational curriculum similar to that of an international school.
According to the police investigation, although the facility was registered as a private institute, it encouraged prolonged absences of elementary and middle school students who are subject to compulsory education, and conducted classes and student management in a manner similar to that of an international school.
