[US-Iran End of Hostilities] World Leaders Welcome Peace, Urge Swift Reopening of Strait of Hormuz
Following the news of the end of hostilities between the United States and Iran, countries across the world on June 14 (local time) welcomed the development and called for the swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to CNN and other outlets, the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement on the same day, expressing their "sincere welcome" of the agreement to end the Iran war. They called for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened urgently, "with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation guaranteed." The leaders stated, "We will fulfill our roles in accordance with our respective constitutional requirements in order to achieve this," and added, "We will take necessary measures, including defensive and independent missions to reassure commercial shipping and conduct mine-clearing operations." They particularly emphasized their readiness to lift sanctions against Iran, stating, "Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons. We are prepared to work with the United States, Iran, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure this."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also issued a separate statement via social media on the same day, saying, "We are ready to support the technical consultations that will now begin." He mentioned supporting mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz and added that, "if necessary, it could include activating the defensive and independent multinational mission that the United Kingdom and France have led so far."
French President Emmanuel Macron also stressed, "This agreement must lead to the immediate and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the international task force established with the United Kingdom stands ready to support this." He emphasized that, "(The resumption of) maritime traffic in Hormuz, without restrictions or transit fees, is essential for regional stability and the world economy."
Middle Eastern countries neighboring Iran also welcomed the news of the end of hostilities. Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani stated on social media, "We hope that all parties will participate in the upcoming negotiations with a positive and constructive attitude, solidifying and further developing this progress."
