President Lee’s Approval Rating Falls for Four Consecutive Weeks
People Power Party Leads Democratic Party by a Statistically Significant Margin
President Lee Jaemyung's approval rating for state affairs has dropped to the low 50% range. In terms of party support, the People Power Party has reached its highest level since the current administration took office, surpassing the Democratic Party of Korea by a margin outside the margin of error.
According to a public opinion poll released on June 15, 2026 by Realmeter (commissioned by Energy Economy News, conducted via wireless telephone ARS from June 8 to 12 with 2,515 respondents nationwide aged 18 and older, margin of error ±2.0 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, response rate 4.3%), President Lee's approval rating for state affairs fell by 3.7 percentage points from the previous week to 51.5%. The negative assessment increased by 3.2 percentage points to 44.2%.
President Lee's approval rating has declined for four consecutive weeks. Notably, according to daily tallies, the approval rating dropped into the 40% range, reaching 48.1% as of June 12.
Regarding the drop in President Lee's approval, Realmeter explained, "In the midst of nationwide confusion over the lack of ballot papers and counting errors in the June 3 local elections—leading to declarations by university communities and calls for accountability for the National Election Commission's mismanagement—along with adverse economic conditions such as a high exchange rate and high inflation increasing the burden on people's livelihoods, the positive assessment is continuing to decline."
In terms of party support (commissioned by Energy Economy News, conducted via wireless telephone ARS from June 11 to 12 with 1,002 respondents nationwide aged 18 and older, margin of error ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, response rate 3.8%), support for the Democratic Party fell by 3.8 percentage points from the previous week to 38.0%. Support for the People Power Party rose by 3.2 percentage points to 44.3%.
The People Power Party, having seen its approval rating rise for three consecutive weeks, recorded its highest support since the current administration began, while the Democratic Party, with three straight weeks of decline, posted its lowest level in the same period. Realmeter noted, "The gap in support between the two parties is 6.3 percentage points, with the People Power Party leading by a margin outside the margin of error."
Realmeter analyzed, "The People Power Party appears to have gained support from progressive and centrist voters as well as people in their twenties by leading a strong response to the election management crisis, including calls for a parliamentary investigation and a special prosecutor regarding the National Election Commission's handling of the elections." Regarding the Democratic Party, Realmeter said, "Responsibility for the June 3 local election results, internal strife over mismanagement of the election, controversy over Representative Jeong Chungrae's leadership and calls for his resignation, and intensifying factional conflict within the party have led to pronounced defections among key support bases, including Gyeonggi/Incheon, the Honam region, and progressive voters."
