Export Controls on Mythos Impact Korea's Project Glasswing Participation... Government "Assessing the Situation"
U.S. Government Blocks Foreign Access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5
Government: "Verifying Facts and Discussing Countermeasures"
The U.S. government has imposed export controls on Anthropic's high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) model "Mythos," putting a halt to the participation of the South Korean government and companies in "Project Glasswing."
An official from the Ministry of Science and ICT stated on June 14 that, regarding the U.S. government's export controls on Mythos, "We are currently verifying the facts and discussing possible responses."
Previously, on June 12 (local time), Anthropic announced that the U.S. government had issued export control guidelines to completely block access to "Mythos 5" and "Fable 5" by foreign nationals, following national security directives. This measure applies not only to overseas users, but also to foreign nationals residing in the U.S. and foreign employees of Anthropic. Immediately after the guidelines were issued, Anthropic suspended both the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 services for all customers in order to comply with the regulations.
Project Glasswing is a security consortium established by Anthropic in April when it announced the development of its latest model, Claude Mythos. The goal is to use Mythos to detect cyber vulnerabilities across various industries. Organizations and companies participating in the consortium are granted authority to utilize Mythos.
On June 2 (local time), Anthropic expanded the number of participating organizations in Project Glasswing to around 150 new institutions across 15 countries. It has been reported that Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and SK Telecom are among the newly eligible participants. The Ministry of Science and ICT also joined through the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA).
Earlier, on May 29, the government announced a "Private Sector Information Security Initiative to Respond to AI-Based Cyber Threats" at a meeting of ministers in charge of science and technology. At the meeting, the government stated it would establish a rapid information sharing and dissemination framework for AI vulnerabilities, led by the National Security Office, and create an emergency joint response system for cyber incidents. In addition, the Ministry of Science and ICT will operate a general situation room, while each relevant ministry will run its own situation room for the private sector.
South Korean companies participating in Project Glasswing have also been directly impacted by this measure. It has been reported that, following the U.S. government's action, these companies have been communicating with Anthropic to assess the situation. However, since their participation in Glasswing was still in its early stages, it is understood that they had not yet begun utilizing the actual model.
