On World Cup Match Day, Chicken Orders Surge Tenfold
Baemin Sees 875.8% Surge in Chicken Orders on the Morning of June 12
The Korean national football team's victory over the Czech Republic in their first World Cup match on June 12 led to a surge in orders on Baemin (Baedal Minjok).
Woowa Brothers announced on June 14 that an analysis of customer orders between 9 a.m. and noon on the day of the match showed a 65.4% increase in the number of orders compared to the same period last year. This also represented a 36.6% increase compared to the previous month and a 51.5% increase compared to the previous week.
By food category, chicken saw the most remarkable growth. Chicken orders jumped by 875.8% compared to the same day of the previous week. Following chicken, pizza (up 220.8%) and jokbal·bossam (up 97.9%) were the next categories with the highest growth rates.
Other categories such as fast food (up 54.2%), Chinese cuisine (up 53.2%), Korean street food (up 38.1%), lunchboxes (up 26.6%), and cafe·desserts (up 25.6%) also saw an increase in orders during the same time slot compared to the previous week, indicating an overall expansion in delivery demand.
In particular, as office workers gathered to watch the match in their offices, the number of orders in major office districts such as Jongno, Gwanghwamun, Euljiro, Yeouido, and Gangnam increased by 46.4% compared to the previous week. By district, the Gwanghwamun area (including Seorin-dong in Jongno-gu and Mugyo-dong in Jung-gu, Seoul) recorded the highest growth rate with a 115% increase in orders. Yeouido (Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul) saw a 71.3% rise, Euljiro (Euljiro 1~7-ga, Jung-gu, Seoul) increased by 58.5%, and Yeoksam-dong in Gangnam-gu rose by 34.7%.
University areas were also lively. Despite the early hours, demand from groups gathering in and around campuses to watch the match contributed to a roughly 51.5% increase in orders in these areas compared to the previous week.

A Woowa Brothers official stated, "Such a large increase in orders during the morning is unusual," adding, "The data confirms that a new culture is emerging, with people enjoying national football matches with delivery food regardless of the time of day."
