Why Did the Man Jump Into the Rapids at Iguazu Falls?
Risky Act to Retrieve Dropped Phone
Ongoing Casualties Due to Safety Regulation Violations
A tourist sparked controversy at Iguazu Falls, the world's largest waterfall system located on the border between Brazil and Argentina, by dangerously jumping into the rapids in an attempt to retrieve a dropped mobile phone.
According to the New York Post and other outlets on June 8 (local time), a tourist identified as A reportedly climbed over the safety railing at the Brazil-side Iguazu Falls observatory and entered the river. This was done in an effort to recover a lost smartphone.
This man was seen walking through the rapids near the edge of the waterfall cliff, which is about 60 meters high. He conducted a search in the dangerous area adjacent to the waterfall drop-off point, then reportedly managed to return to the observatory railing on his own.
Afterwards, A was stopped by site management staff and expelled from the park. Officials then issued a warning, stating, "If you drop a personal item, you must contact the on-site fire brigade to check if it is possible to recover it."
