Wonsando Island, Now Just Minutes Away via Undersea Tunnel
Emerging as a Popular Family Vacation Destination
Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Chungnam will open on the 4th of next month and remain open for 51 days.
Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Chungnam, which boasts the only shell powder sand beach in East Asia, will open on July 4 and kick off its 51-day peak summer season.
Daecheon Beach, with its 3.5-kilometer-long white sand shore and year-round diverse festivals, draws 15 million visitors annually as one of South Korea's premier tourist destinations.
In particular, the Boryeong Mud Festival, held every summer, has earned a global reputation as a festival that captivates tourists from all over the world.
This year, the city is putting forth its utmost effort to create a perfect summer retreat. Three tourist information centers will operate during the open season, and 47 cleaning staff will be deployed to maintain a pleasant environment around the clock. Prioritizing the safety of vacationers, 126 safety personnel and 29 water rescue devices will be stationed on site, as the city aims to achieve a fourth consecutive year with no casualties.
On July 11, Muchangpo Beach—which first opened in 1928 as the West Coast’s earliest beach—will take up the baton. Muchangpo is famous for the phenomenon where, two to three times each month around the lunar full moon and new moon, a 1.5-kilometer-long pathway appears as the sea parts.
The city also plans to focus its administrative resources here, aiming for zero water-related accidents by installing safety buoys and operating two watchtowers.
With the opening of the Boryeong Undersea Tunnel, the nation’s longest underwater tunnel, Wonsando Island is now just a 10-minute drive from Daecheon Beach and will welcome summer visitors this year as well.
Wonsando Island is home to three beaches—Wonsando, Sachang, and Obongsan—which are gaining attention as family vacation spots. About 700,000 tourists are expected to visit during the open season.
In particular, the 'Sunset Observatory,' located at the tip of Wonsando Beach, is an emerging attraction. This 269-meter-long overwater pedestrian bridge offers panoramic views of the rocky cliffs and the wide-open West Sea sunset.
Yongdu Beach, located in Nampo-myeon, is perfect for those seeking healing in tranquil nature. Surrounded by dense pine forests and the blue sea, it features a forest campsite, offering a unique charm where visitors can enjoy both camping and swimming at the same time.
