Hydrangea Path Created with Cooperation from Korea University and Sungshin Women's University

The entrance to Gaewoonsan Mountain in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, which had been neglected for decades due to illegal dumping of trash, has been transformed into a popular hydrangea spot.

The area around 17 Goryeodae-ro, located on the boundary between Korea University and Sungshin Women's University, had long suffered from illegal dumping of garbage and waste. On June 11, Seongbuk-gu announced that, with the cooperation of the two universities, the district has been carrying out extensive environmental clean-up and the creation of a hydrangea path since last year.

The district planted a total of 10,220 hydrangeas of nine different varieties, including Annabelle hydrangeas and Endless Summer hydrangeas, as well as 205 trees such as dogwoods, and 2,797 plants of seven perennial flower species. The restoration area was expanded to include forest areas damaged by unauthorized cultivation, where an additional 1,850 hydrangeas, such as Daruma hydrangeas and Star hydrangeas, were planted.

With the hydrangeas now in full bloom, the Gaewoonsan Hydrangea Path is quickly gaining popularity as a summer destination in the city. Seongbuk-gu plans to operate resident participation garden programs in connection with nearby green infrastructure, including the Gaewoonsan Book Shelter, Welcome Garden, Summer Scent Garden, and Fern Garden.

Seungro Lee, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, "As the Gaewoonsan Hydrangea Path is filled with the freshness of early summer, I hope that many citizens will visit and enjoy a time of healing and rejuvenation in their daily lives."
