NBS Opinion Poll
President Lee's Approval Rating Drops by 9 Percentage Points from Previous Survey
Democratic Party at 41%, People Power Party at 25%
After the June 3 local elections, President Lee Jaemyung's approval rating for state affairs dropped significantly, falling to the upper 50% range. Regarding the recent local elections, more respondents believed that the opposition parties performed better than expected, compared to those who felt the ruling parties had performed better than expected.
According to the regular National Barometer Survey (NBS)—released on June 11 by Embrain Public, Kstat Research, Korea Research, and Hankook Research—which interviewed 1,001 men and women aged 18 or older nationwide via mobile phone from June 8 to 10 (with a sampling error of ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level and a response rate of 26.0%), the positive evaluation of President Lee's administration ("doing well" or "very well") stood at 57%, while the negative evaluation ("doing poorly" or "very poorly") was 33%. This represents a 9 percentage point decline compared to the most recent survey conducted before the pre-election poll blackout period in the third week of May.
NBS analyzed that "excluding those in their 40s and 50s, the gap between positive and negative evaluations has narrowed to within the margin of error among other age groups."
Regarding trust in President Lee's administration, 56% responded that they "trust" (including "strongly trust"), while 37% indicated they "do not trust" (including "do not trust at all"). Compared to the previous survey, trust in state affairs declined by 11 percentage points.
In terms of party support, the approval rating for the Democratic Party of Korea was 41%, down 4 percentage points from the previous survey. People Power Party recorded 25%, up 5 percentage points. The Reform Party and Korea Innovation Party each recorded 3% and 2%, respectively, while the Progressive Party was also at 2%.
Regarding the outcome of this local election, 45% of respondents said that "the opposition parties, including the People Power Party, performed better than expected." In contrast, 31% responded that "the ruling parties, including the Democratic Party, performed better than expected." NBS explained, "Across all groups, regardless of party preference or ideological orientation, more respondents said the opposition performed well."
As for the parliamentary investigation into the shortage of local election ballots, 85% said it was "necessary," while 11% said it was "not necessary."
